So, the other morning, I decided I wanted an omelet. Nothing fancy, just eggs. But then I saw that old rotary egg beater hanging around. You know the one, with the crank? Haven’t touched that thing in years. Usually just use a fork. Thought, why not give it a whirl today?

Cracking On

Grabbed two eggs. Cold from the fridge. Cracked ’em into a bowl. Standard stuff. Then I fished out the beater. It felt a bit clunky in my hand, honestly. Metal on metal. Stuck it in the bowl.

Started cranking. It’s noisy! Makes this whirring sound, gets faster the harder you crank. You really gotta hold the bowl steady otherwise the whole thing wants to walk away. The eggs started changing quick, though. Way faster than beating with a fork. Went from yolky mess to pale yellow foam pretty sharpish.

Things I noticed right away:

  • It gets frothy SUPER fast.
  • You get a bit of a workout for your wrist.
  • It’s kinda loud for early morning.

Into the Pan

Okay, so eggs looked properly beaten. Maybe over-beaten? Who knows. Added a splash of milk, pinch of salt and pepper. Gave it one last quick whir with the beater. Got the pan hot, little bit of butter melted and sizzling. Poured the egg mixture in.

It spread out okay. Looked maybe a bit… fluffier? Bubbled up differently than usual. Cooked it low and slow, like always. Didn’t add cheese or anything this time, wanted to see how the egg texture itself turned out from the beater.

The Verdict

Flipped it, cooked the other side briefly, slid it onto a plate. Looked like an omelet. Maybe slightly puffier than my usual fork-whipped ones, but not dramatically so. Cut into it. Texture was fine, maybe a little lighter, a little more delicate?

Taste-wise? It tasted like… eggs. Cooked eggs. The beater didn’t magically transform the flavor or anything. It was a decent omelet, perfectly edible.

Was it worth digging out the rotary beater, the cranking, the extra noise, and the slightly more awkward cleanup compared to a fork? Eh. Probably not, for me anyway. It works, sure. Gets the job done fast. But sometimes faster isn’t really better, just faster. Fork works fine. Less fuss. Probably stick to the fork next time.
