Okay, so today I tried to make these whole wheat soup crackers. I saw this recipe online and thought, “Hey, that looks easy enough, and I’ve got all this whole wheat flour to use up.” So, I jumped right in.
First, I gathered all my ingredients. I grabbed the whole wheat flour, some baking powder, salt, a bit of sugar, some cold butter, and milk. Pretty basic stuff, right? I also preheated my oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit because I remember someone said that a hot oven is important for crackers.

Then, I mixed the dry ingredients in a big bowl. I dumped in the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar, and gave it all a good whisk. After that, I cut in the cold butter. This was kind of a pain, to be honest. I used a pastry blender, but you could use your fingers or even two knives. You want the butter to be in small pieces, like little peas, mixed in with the flour.
Once the butter was all mixed in, I slowly added the milk. I stirred everything together with a fork until it started to come together as a dough. It was a bit crumbly at first, but I kept mixing until it formed a ball. I didn’t want to overmix it, though, because I heard that can make the crackers tough.
Next, I rolled out the dough on a lightly floured surface. I aimed for about 1/8 inch thickness, but I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t perfectly even. I used a rolling pin, but it still took some elbow grease. After rolling it out, I cut the dough into squares. I just used a knife, nothing fancy. I also pricked each square with a fork a few times, which I read helps them bake evenly and not puff up too much.
Finally, I placed the squares on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and popped them in the oven. I baked them for about 10-12 minutes until they were golden brown and crispy. They smelled pretty good while they were baking, I must say.
The Result
- The crackers turned out pretty well! They were definitely crispy, which is what I was going for.
- They had a nice, nutty flavor from the whole wheat flour.
- I think they would be perfect with some soup or cheese.
- Next time, I might try adding some herbs or spices to the dough for extra flavor.
Overall, it was a fun little baking experiment. It wasn’t too difficult, and it was satisfying to make something from scratch. Plus, now I have a big batch of homemade crackers to snack on. If you’re looking for a simple baking project, give these whole wheat soup crackers a try!
