Whole Wheat Soda Crackers: Make Your Own at Home!

Alright, let’s get this done. I’ve been wanting to try making my own crackers for a while now, something a bit healthier than the usual stuff I grab from the store. So, today, I decided to give these whole wheat soda crackers a shot. I found a simple recipe online, and figured, why not?

First, I gathered all the ingredients. I didn’t have any of that fancy stuff, just regular all-purpose flour and some whole wheat flour I had lying around. Needed a bit of butter, water, dry yeast, and a pinch of salt. Nothing complicated, which is just how I like it.

Whole Wheat Soda Crackers: Make Your Own at Home!

I grabbed a medium-sized bowl and tossed in the dry ingredients. We’re talking about 40 grams of all-purpose flour, 60 grams of the whole wheat stuff, about 5/8 of a teaspoon of yeast, and just a 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Gave that a good mix to make sure everything was evenly distributed.

Next, I added the butter. The recipe called for 15 grams, which seemed about right. I used a fork, like the instructions mentioned, and worked the butter into the flour mixture until it looked all crumbly. It was a bit of a workout, but kinda satisfying, you know?

Then I slowly added 45ml of water to the mixture, stirring it well until it formed a dough. It took some time and effort to get the dough to the right consistency.

After that, I rolled out the dough on a lightly floured surface. It was pretty easy to work with, not too sticky or anything. I got it nice and thin, just like you’d want for crackers. Then, I used a cookie cutter to cut out the cracker shapes. But you can use a knife, and you can cut them into squares.

I placed the cut-out dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Pricked each cracker a few times with a fork – I guess that helps them bake evenly or something. I sprinkled some sea salt on top because, well, everything’s better with a bit of sea salt, right?

Finally, I popped the baking sheet into a preheated oven. I set it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. They baked for about 15-20 minutes until they were golden brown and crispy. Took them out and let them cool on a wire rack.

Honestly, they turned out better than I expected! Crunchy, a bit salty, and with that nice whole wheat flavor. I was pretty proud of myself. I made a whole batch and shared some with my neighbors. They loved them too. It is definitely worth giving it a try if you’re into baking or just want to try something new.

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Total Time

  • Prep time: 30 minutes
  • Bake time: 15-20 minutes

And there you have it, folks! My little baking adventure for the day. Not too shabby for a first try, if I do say so myself.
