Okay, so I’ve been on this huge sourdough kick lately. I love the tangy flavor and the chewy texture, but finding a good whole wheat sourdough? That’s been a challenge. So I made it my mission to track down the best whole wheat sourdough bread, and here’s how it all went down.
The Search Begins
First, I hit up my local grocery stores. I checked out the bakery sections of the bigger chains, hoping they might have something. No luck. Plenty of regular sourdough, but whole wheat was nowhere to be found. I even asked a bakery employee at one store, and they just shrugged.

Expanding the Search
I realized I needed to broaden my horizons. I started looking at smaller, artisan bakeries in my area. I figured they’d be more likely to have specialty bread like whole wheat sourdough. I spent a good hour just Googling “artisan bakeries near me” and made a list of places to check out.
The Bakery Crawl
- Bakery #1: Cute little place, smelled amazing, but they only had white sourdough. The baker told me they sometimes make whole wheat, but it’s not a regular item. Strike one.
- Bakery #2: This one was a bit further out, but I had high hopes. They had a huge selection of bread… but still no whole wheat sourdough. I was starting to get discouraged.
- Bakery #3: This place was the charm! I walked in, and there it was, a beautiful, crusty loaf of whole wheat sourdough. I almost did a little happy dance right there in the store.
Success at the Farmer’s market
I Also find a new place that I never tried,It’s a booth at my local farmer’s market.
I talked to the baker, and she explained that she only uses organic whole wheat flour and a long fermentation process. I bought a loaf, and it was seriously amazing. The crust was perfectly crispy, and the inside was soft and chewy with that perfect sourdough tang. And it was all whole wheat!
The Verdict
So, after all that searching, my best bet is the booth at farmer’s market,It might take a little more effort, but for really good whole wheat sourdough, it’s worth * that’s not an option, try small, local bakeries. Don’t be afraid to ask if they make it, even if you don’t see it on display.
