Okay, so today I decided to tackle making cookie piping bags. I’ve seen those fancy cookies with perfect icing, and I thought, “I can do that!” Spoiler alert: it’s a little trickier than it looks, but still fun!
Getting Started
First, I gathered my materials. You’ll need:

- Cookie dough (I just used store-bought, no shame in that!)
- Royal icing (again, store-bought. I’m all about easy today.)
- Parchment paper or wax paper
- Scissors
- Tape (optional)
Making the Piping Bags
I started by cutting a large square of parchment paper. The size depends on how much icing you want to use, but I went with about 12×12 inches. Then, I folded it in half diagonally to make a triangle. Easy peasy!
Next, I took one of the long corners of the triangle and started rolling it inwards, creating a cone shape. This part was a little fiddly. I had to adjust it a few times to get a nice, tight point at the bottom. It’s important to make sure there are no gaps, or the icing will leak out.
Once I was happy with the cone shape, I folded the top edges down to secure it. Some people use tape, but I found that folding worked fine. It’s like wrapping a little present, but messier.
Filling and Using the Bags
Now for the fun part! I carefully scooped some royal icing into the bag. Don’t overfill it, or it’ll be hard to handle. I left about an inch or two of space at the top.
Then, I folded the top of the bag down several times, twisting it to create pressure. This is how you control the flow of the icing.
I snipped off the very tip of the cone with scissors. Start with a small snip, you can always make it bigger later. And then… I started piping! I practiced on a piece of parchment paper first, just to get the hang of it. My first few attempts were… interesting. Let’s just say they weren’t exactly Instagram-worthy.
But, I kept practicing, and I slowly started to get the hang of it. It’s all about applying even pressure and controlling the movement of your hand. I managed to decorate a few cookies, and even though they weren’t perfect, they were definitely homemade with love (and a little bit of frustration!).

The End Result
My cookies won’t win any awards, The piping bags worked pretty well, though! They were a little messy, but hey, that’s part of the fun.
I would make those piping bags again. It is so much Cheaper than buying the pre-made ones. Next time try to make my own royal icing!
