Okay, so the other day I was messing around in the kitchen, trying to make some cupcakes for my kid’s birthday party. I wanted to do some fancy frosting designs, you know, make ’em look all professional and stuff. But here’s the thing – I didn’t have any of those fancy piping bags. And I sure as heck wasn’t gonna run out to the store just for that.
So, I’m rummaging through my drawers, and I spot a box of ziplock bags. A lightbulb went off in my head. I thought, “Why not try using these as piping bags?” I mean, they’re made of plastic, they have a seal, seems like it could work, right?

First, I whipped up a batch of my go-to buttercream frosting. Got it nice and fluffy, added some food coloring – the usual deal. Then came the tricky part. I spooned the frosting into one of the ziplock bags. I tried to be neat about it, but let’s be real, it got a little messy. Frosting all over my fingers, classic.
Once I got a good amount of frosting in there, I sealed the bag, making sure to squeeze out as much air as possible. This is important, folks! You don’t want any air bubbles messing up your design. Then, I took a pair of scissors and snipped off a tiny corner of the bag. Just a little snip, mind you. You can always make the hole bigger, but you can’t make it smaller.
Testing Time
- First Attempt: I started squeezing the bag, and the frosting started coming out. It was a bit uneven at first, but I got the hang of it.
- Adjusting: The hole was too small, so I snipped it a little bigger. Tried again. Much better!
- Practice: I practiced making swirls and stars on a piece of parchment paper. It actually looked pretty decent!
Once I felt confident enough, I started decorating the cupcakes. I won’t lie, it wasn’t perfect. Some of the swirls were a little wonky, but overall, it worked! The cupcakes looked way fancier than if I had just spread the frosting with a knife. And the best part? I didn’t have to wash any piping bags afterward. Just tossed the ziplock in the trash. Easy peasy.
So, there you have it. My little experiment with using ziplock bags as disposable piping bags. It’s a great hack if you’re in a pinch or if you just don’t want to deal with the hassle of cleaning real piping bags. Give it a try sometime! You might be surprised at how well it works.
