Okay, so the other day, I’m baking, right? And I’ve got these awesome cupcakes that just came out of the oven. Smelled amazing. I whipped up some buttercream frosting, my favorite part, and got my piping bags ready. Now, I usually use those disposable plastic ones ’cause, let’s be honest, who wants to wash those things after? Anyway, I filled up the bag, twisted the top, and started piping.
But then, disaster struck! The frosting started oozing out from the top. What a mess! My hands were covered, the counter was covered, and my beautiful cupcakes were… well, they still looked okay, but the whole process was way messier than it needed to be. I tried squeezing the bag from the middle, but that just made things worse. More frosting everywhere!

I finished up that batch, grumbling the whole time, and then it hit me. I remembered seeing these little clips somewhere, probably on one of those baking shows I binge-watch. They’re made specifically for closing off the top of piping bags. Genius, right?
So, I hopped online and ordered a bunch. When they arrived, I was eager to try them. I used a pair of scissors to cut a small amount off of one corner of the bag and put the bag in another bag with a tip. They are the smaller kind and are perfect for decorating. Next time I made cupcakes, I filled up my piping bag as usual, but this time, I put the tip in first, then fill the bag with frosting, twisted the top, and then I used one of those new clips to secure it. I squeezed the bag, and guess what? No mess! The frosting came out perfectly from the tip, and the top stayed clean.
Here’s what I did, step-by-step:
- Filled the piping bag with frosting.
- Twisted the open end of the bag to push the frosting down.
- Placed a piping bag clip around the twisted part of the bag.
- Started decorating!
These little clips have seriously changed my baking game. I used to dread the mess of using piping bags, but now it’s a breeze. They’re super cheap, too, so I got a whole bunch of them. Seriously, if you do any kind of baking that involves piping, you need these clips in your life. I’m telling you, they’re total lifesavers!
I know some folks like those reusable bags, and that’s cool. But I’m all about that convenience and easy cleanup. Plus, with the clips, I don’t have to worry about any leftover frosting drying out in the bag.
What I have learned:
These piping bag clips are my new favorite baking tool. If you like to decorate with the smaller kind of tips, and get annoyed with messy bags, get yourself some piping bag clips. They’re cheap and make baking so much easier!
