Okay, so I’ve been baking a lot lately, and I’ve got to tell you about this thing I finally got – a dough scraper. It’s plastic, nothing fancy, but man, has it changed my life! I used to struggle so much with sticky doughs, especially when I’m making sourdough. It would get all over my hands, the counter, everything. What a mess!
So, I finally caved and bought one of these dough scrapers. It’s just a simple, rectangular piece of plastic, slightly flexible. I wasn’t expecting much, honestly.

My First Try
The first time I used it, I was making a pretty wet sourdough. I sprinkled a bit of flour on the counter, like usual, and dumped the dough out. Usually, this is where the chaos begins.
But this time, I grabbed my new scraper. I used the edge to kind of fold the dough over on itself, you know, to develop some strength. It was SO much easier than trying to do it with my hands. The dough didn’t stick to the plastic at all!
- No more sticky fingers! This was the biggest win.
- Cleaning the counter was a breeze. Usually, I’d have to scrape and scrub to get all the dried bits of dough off. With the scraper, I just ran it across the surface, and it picked up everything.
- Shaping the dough was easier too. I could use the scraper to push and guide the dough into a nice, round shape without it sticking to everything.
I’m telling you, this little piece of plastic is a game-changer. I used to dread working with high-hydration doughs, but now it’s actually kind of fun. I just kept folding and scraping, and the dough came together beautifully.
I baked that loaf, and it was probably one of the best I’ve ever made. I’m not saying the scraper is magic, but… maybe it is a little bit. Seriously, if you bake bread, you NEED one of these. It’s probably the cheapest, most useful tool in my kitchen now.
