So, the other day I was craving something sweet, and I thought, “Why not try making a matcha cake?” I’m not a big baker, but I do love matcha, and I figured it would be a fun little project. Plus, who doesn’t love a good cake?
First, I looked up “matcha cake nearby” on my phone. I just wanted to see what kind of options there were around me, and maybe get some inspiration. Most of the results were for bakeries and cafes selling matcha-flavored treats, but I really wanted to make one myself. I mean, how hard could it be, right?

Finding a Recipe
Next, I started searching for some matcha cake recipes. There are tons of them online, each one slightly different from the others. Some used fancy ingredients I’d never heard of, while others seemed a bit too basic. I spent a good hour just scrolling through different recipes, trying to find one that seemed doable and delicious.
Finally, I settled on a recipe that looked promising. It didn’t require a million ingredients, and the instructions were pretty straightforward. The recipe called for the usual suspects like flour, sugar, eggs, and butter, along with matcha powder, of course. It also used milk and a bit of vanilla extract. Seemed simple enough.
Gathering Ingredients
With the recipe in hand, I headed to the grocery store. I already had most of the basic stuff at home, but I needed to grab a few things, including the matcha powder. I wandered around the aisles for a bit, comparing prices and brands. I ended up grabbing a small tin of matcha powder that looked decent. I also picked up some fresh milk and a new bottle of vanilla extract, just to be safe.
Baking Time
Back home, I preheated the oven and got all my ingredients ready. I measured out the flour, sugar, and matcha powder, whisked them together in a bowl. In another bowl, I creamed together the butter and sugar until it was light and fluffy. Then, I beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. I am so happy that I have a mixer at home.
Slowly, I added the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. The batter was a beautiful pale green color, and it smelled amazing. I poured the batter into a greased and floured cake pan and popped it into the oven.
The Waiting Game
The recipe said to bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. I set a timer and waited, but I could smell the delicious matcha. It is killing me! I cannot wait to have a taste!
After 30 minutes, I checked the cake. The toothpick came out with a few moist crumbs, so I gave it another 5 minutes. Finally, it was done! I took the cake out of the oven and let it cool in the pan for a bit before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

The Final Result
Once the cake was completely cool, I made a simple glaze with powdered sugar, a bit of milk, and some more matcha powder. I drizzled the glaze over the cake, letting it drip down the sides. It looked so pretty!
Finally, it was time to taste the cake. I cut myself a slice and took a bite. It was soft, moist, and had a lovely matcha flavor. It wasn’t too sweet, which I liked. I was pretty proud of myself for making a cake from scratch, and it actually tasted good! I know it might be clumsy for a first try, but I will take it.
So, that’s the story of my matcha cake adventure. It was a fun little baking project, and I’m definitely going to try making it again sometime. Maybe next time I’ll experiment with different flavors or decorations. But for now, I’m just happy to enjoy a slice of my homemade matcha cake. Yummy!
