So, I was working on this cake the other day, a big one, for a friend’s birthday. And I ran into this problem – my regular piping bags were just too small. I needed to decorate this massive thing, and constantly refilling those tiny bags was driving me nuts!
That’s when I decided to finally get myself some large piping bags. I’d been putting it off, but honestly, it was a game-changer.

Getting Started
First, I had to pick which ones to buy. I didn’t want those flimsy disposable ones. I wanted something sturdy, reusable, you know?
- Looked at some online, browsed a few kitchen supply stores.
- Ended up finding some heavy-duty canvas ones that felt like they could handle a serious amount of frosting.
The Practice Round
Before the big day (my friend’s birthday), I figured I should do a test run. Smart move, right? Good thing I did, because I learned a few things:
- Filling them is a two-person job sometimes. These things are HUGE. I had my partner hold the bag open while I scooped in the frosting. Teamwork makes the dream work!
- They hold A LOT of frosting. Like, way more than you think. I ended up overfilling the first one and had a bit of a frosting explosion. Lesson learned: go slow.
- Controlling the flow takes practice. With a bigger bag, you need a bit more finesse. I practiced some swirls and rosettes on a piece of parchment paper until I felt comfortable.
Cake Day Success!
When it came time to decorate the actual cake, I felt so much more prepared.
- I filled the large piping bag with help for easier using.
- I was able to pipe large sections without stopping to refill, which made the whole process so much faster and smoother.
- The decorations looked great, if I do say so myself, and my friend loved the cake!
Honestly, I don’t know why I waited so long to get large piping bags. They’re a total lifesaver, especially for bigger projects. If you’re on the fence, just do it. You won’t regret it!
