Today, I decided to try making animal cracker cookies. I’ve always loved those cute little snacks, and I thought it would be fun to make them myself. Plus, it would be a great way to spend a day with kids and get them involved in the kitchen.
Getting Started
First, I looked up a basic sugar cookie recipe online. I found one that only needed eight ingredients, which seemed pretty easy. The recipe was simple enough: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and a few other basic baking things. I gathered all the ingredients and got everything laid out on the counter.

Mixing the Dough
I started by mixing the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another. Then, I slowly combined them, mixing until a dough started to form. It was a bit sticky, but I kneaded it a few times on a floured surface until it was smooth and easy to handle.
Choosing the Cookie Cutters
This is where the fun part began. I had bought a set of animal-shaped cookie cutters online a while back. The set included an elephant, a giraffe, a zebra, and a lion. They were made of BPA-free plastic, which made me feel good about using them. To prevent the dough from sticking, I dipped the cutters in flour before each cut.
Cutting and Baking
I rolled out the dough to about a quarter-inch thickness. Then, I started cutting out the cookies. The kids helped with this part, and we had a blast making different animals. We carefully placed the cut-out cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Once the sheet was full, I popped it into the preheated oven. The recipe said to bake for about 8-10 minutes, or until the edges were golden brown. I kept a close eye on them to make sure they didn’t burn.
Cooling and Decorating
After baking, I let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once they were cool, we got ready to decorate. I made a simple icing with powdered sugar and milk, and we used it to add some details to our animals.
The Result
The cookies turned out great! They were cute, tasty, and a lot of fun to make. The kids loved them, and I have to admit, I did too. It was a great way to spend an afternoon, and we ended up with a bunch of delicious homemade animal crackers.
