Today, I wanted to share a little project I worked on recently—painting gingerbread houses. It sounds simple enough, but let me tell you, it was a bit of a ride!
So, I started by spray painting the houses brown. I thought it would be a quick and easy way to get that gingerbread color. Boy, was I wrong! The color I picked turned out to be way too dark. It looked nothing like the gingerbread I had in mind. They looked more like chocolate houses. I didn’t know what to do.

After a bit of a panic, I decided to head over to Michaels. I figured they’d have something that could help me fix this mess. And they did! I found a bottle of light brown acrylic paint that looked just right. I grabbed it, paid, and rushed back home.
When I got home, I got right to work. I started painting each house by hand with the new paint. It was a bit tedious, but I have to say, it was worth it. The houses started to look more and more like actual gingerbread houses. The color was perfect, and the texture was just right.
- Spray painting: A total fail! The color was all wrong.
- Michaels run: Found the perfect light brown acrylic paint.
- Hand painting: Tedious but totally worth it in the end.
In the end, the gingerbread houses turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself. It wasn’t what I originally planned, but sometimes, these little detours lead to even better results. It reminded me that it’s okay to make mistakes and that sometimes, the best solutions come from a bit of improvisation. After painting, I decorated them with all sorts of edible goodies, like candies, icing, and sprinkles. It was fun to get creative with the decorations, but the real star of the show was that perfect gingerbread color we achieved with the hand painting.
Lessons Learned
This little project taught me a few things. First, don’t always trust the first method you try. Spray painting seemed like a good idea, but it was a total flop. Second, don’t be afraid to ask for help or look for alternatives. Michaels had exactly what I needed. And finally, sometimes the longer, more tedious route is the best one. Hand painting each house took time, but it made all the difference.
So, that’s the story of my gingerbread house painting adventure. It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely a learning experience. And hey, the final product looked delicious enough to eat, even if I couldn’t!
