Okay, so I decided to do some baking the other day. Had these turkey cookie cutters sitting in the drawer for ages, probably since last Thanksgiving or the one before that. Figured it was time to give them a try again.
First thing, I had to make the dough. Just went with my standard sugar cookie recipe. Nothing fancy. Mixed the butter and sugar, added the egg, then the flour. Simple stuff. Sometimes it comes out perfect, other times it’s a bit sticky. This time? Yeah, a bit sticky.

Put the dough in the fridge for a bit. Supposed to help. Helped a little, I guess. Then I rolled it out on the counter. Flour everywhere, of course. Always happens. Tried to get it not too thin, not too thick. You know how it is.
Cutting Out the Turkeys
Got the cutters out. Had a couple of different turkey shapes. One big one, one kinda medium. Started pressing them into the dough. Getting them out clean was the tricky part. Especially the one with the detailed feathers. The dough wanted to stick in the little bits.
- Pushed the cutter down firmly.
- Wiggled it just a tiny bit.
- Lifted it straight up, carefully.
- Sometimes I had to poke the dough out with a finger or a knife tip.
Managed to get a whole tray full of turkey shapes. Some looked better than others. A few lost a leg or part of their tail fan. Oh well. That’s baking sometimes.
Slid the tray into the oven. Set the timer. Watched them bake. They puffed up a bit. Started to get golden around the edges. Pulled them out just in time, I think. Moved them onto the wire rack to cool down completely. That part’s important, otherwise the icing just melts off.
Decorating Time
Once they were cool, I mixed up some basic icing. Tried to make brown, red, a bit of yellow. Wanted them to look like actual turkeys. Well, I tried. Let’s just say my decorating skills aren’t exactly professional level.
Slathered on some brown icing for the body. Added a little red bit for the wattle. Put on some candy eyes. Some looked okay. Others looked… abstract. Artistic, maybe? Yeah, let’s go with artistic.
But hey, they tasted good. That’s the main thing, right? The kids enjoyed them. Didn’t seem to mind the slightly wonky decorations. They were gone pretty fast. So, mission accomplished, I suppose. The turkey cookie cutters did their job.
