Granulated Sugar Weight: Whats the Weight of Sugar? Get the Right Weight for Your Recipes!

Okay, so today I wanted to figure out just how much granulated sugar weighs. You know, like when you’re baking and the recipe calls for a cup of sugar, but you want to be precise and use a kitchen scale instead. I mean, who doesn’t want to be sure they’re getting the right amount, right?

So, I grabbed my trusty kitchen scale, a measuring cup, and a bag of sugar. First thing I did was to make sure my scale was zeroed out. Gotta start with a clean slate, you know?

Then, I carefully scooped some sugar into the measuring cup until it reached the 1 cup mark. I tried to be pretty accurate about it, leveling it off with a knife and all that. After that, I poured the sugar onto the scale to see what it weighed.

The scale showed around 7 ounces, which is roughly 198 grams. Pretty close to what those baking websites say, so I guess that’s accurate. I did this a couple of times to be sure, and yeah, the weight was pretty consistent.

  • First attempt: 7.1 ounces (about 201 grams)
  • Second attempt: 6.9 ounces (about 196 grams)
  • Third attempt: 7 ounces (about 198 grams)

I also measured some other stuff for fun, like all-purpose flour. One cup of that came out to be around 4 1/4 ounces, which is like 120 grams. Oh, and I did baking powder too! One teaspoon of baking powder weighed approximately 4 grams. Also, one half teaspoon of baking soda is about 3 grams.

It’s kind of interesting to see the differences in weight, even when the volume is the same. Like, a cup of sugar is way heavier than a cup of flour. I guess it’s because sugar is denser or something.

Conclusion

So yeah, that’s pretty much it. Now I know that when a recipe calls for a cup of granulated sugar, I can just weigh out 198 grams, give or take, and be good to go. It’s a small thing, but it makes me feel a bit more in control of my baking. Plus, it’s just fun to mess around with the scale and see what things weigh. Who knew kitchen experiments could be so satisfying?
