Foley Flour Sifter for Baking: Classic 5-Cup Vintage Design
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Well now, let me tell ya, back in the day when folks was bakin’ up their bread and cakes, they’d swear by a good old Foley Flour Sifter. It ain’t just a tool, no sir, it was part of the kitchen, just like the stove and the big ol’ cast iron skillet. Now, if ya ain’t heard of it, let me tell ya a bit about this here handy gadget, and why it might just be the thing you need if you love bakin’ or collectin’ vintage stuff like me.

Foley Flour Sifter for Baking: Classic 5-Cup Vintage Design

The Foley Flour Sifter is a real gem, and I reckon it’s been around for a long time. I remember seein’ them in folks’ kitchens when I was young, mostly in the 1950s, but they’ve been makin’ ’em for years. Back then, we didn’t have all them fancy electric gadgets and mixers like today. No sir, we had to do everything by hand, and this sifter, it made bakin’ just a bit easier. It’s a simple thing, just an aluminum body with a handle that you squeeze, and inside there’s a little wheel that turns to sift the flour.

Why would you need a Foley Sifter, you ask? Well, back in the day, flour wasn’t as clean as it is now. You had to sift it to get out the weevils and the bits of husk that would sneak in. A good sifter would catch all that and leave ya with nice, clean flour for your bakin’. Now, nowadays, most of that’s been sorted out with modern milling, but still, there’s somethin’ special about usin’ an old-fashioned sifter. It gets that flour nice and light, and helps ya mix it in better with your dry ingredients.

How it works—you just fill it up with your flour or powdered sugar, grip the handle, and give it a squeeze. The wheel inside turns around and works the flour through three fine screens, breakin’ up the clumps and aeratin’ it at the same time. Makes for a smoother dough or batter, trust me. And the best part is, it don’t take no electricity. Ya just use your hand and a little elbow grease.

Now, if you’re out lookin’ to get yourself a Foley Flour Sifter, they’re not too hard to find. A lot of folks sell ‘em on the internet these days. You can get ’em in all sorts of conditions—some shiny and like new, and some real old and weathered, with a bit of character. Most of the time, they come in a nice aqua or turquoise color, which is somethin’ special. Makes it a pretty addition to the kitchen, too. You might find one for $18 or $20, sometimes even more, dependin’ on the condition and the age.

Keepin’ it clean—now, a lot of folks ask me how to clean a Foley Sifter. Well, here’s the thing—don’t go washin’ it with water. No, that ain’t the way. You wash it with water, you’ll turn the flour into a sticky mess, and that’ll clog up the screens. Best thing to do is shake it out good after each use, maybe tap it a little to get rid of any leftover flour, and store it somewhere dry. That’s the way to keep it workin’ just right for years and years.

Back in the day, we used the Foley Sifter for more than just flour. Folks would use it for powdered sugar, too, especially when they was makin’ pies or cakes. Made the sugar nice and light, and helped spread it evenly. That little tool was as good for bakin’ cakes as it was for siftin’ flour for bread. And let me tell ya, there’s somethin’ about usin’ a vintage tool like this that just feels right. It’s like you’re connected to all them good folks who baked before ya, makin’ meals for their families with love and care.

Collectin’ Foley Sifters—If you’re the type to collect old kitchen gadgets, a Foley Flour Sifter is somethin’ you definitely wanna look out for. They don’t make ‘em like they used to, that’s for sure. You can find ‘em on places like eBay or in antique stores, sometimes for a little more than ya expect, but it’s worth it. The way they’re built, and the history they carry with ‘em, makes ‘em a real treasure.

So, whether you’re lookin’ to bake a perfect loaf of bread or just want a piece of history in your kitchen, the Foley Flour Sifter is a good choice. It’s simple, sturdy, and gets the job done. And let me tell ya, there’s nothin’ quite like the satisfaction of usin’ a tool that’s been passed down through the years. It might not be fancy, but it sure gets the work done. And for that, it’s worth its weight in gold.
