Alright, so you wanna know about this baking powder stuff, huh? 1 1/2 teaspoons in grams, you say? Well, let me tell ya, I ain’t no fancy baker or scientist, but I’ve been cookin’ and bakin’ for donkey’s years. Learned it all from my mama, and her mama before her. We didn’t have no fancy measuring cups or scales back then, just a pinch of this and a handful of that. But times have changed, I guess.
Now, from what I hear, these young folks are all about precision. Gotta have everything measured out just so. Can’t just eyeball it like we used to. So, this baking powder thing… I asked my grandson, the one who’s always on that computer thingy, to look it up for me.

He says, and mind you, I’m just repeating what he told me, that one teaspoon of baking powder is about, and I mean about, ’cause who can be so darn exact all the time, around 4.8 grams. 4.8 grams, you hear that? Sounds mighty precise to me.
- So, if one teaspoon is 4.8 grams…
- and you got 1 and a half teaspoons…
- well, that’s like one teaspoon and then half of another one, right?
My grandson, he did some fancy math on his phone. Said you gotta take that 4.8 grams and add half of it to itself. Half of 4.8, he says, is 2.4. See, I can still do some math in my head! So, you got 4.8 plus 2.4… and that comes out to be… wait for it… 7.2! Yep, 7.2 grams. That’s how much baking powder you got in 1 1/2 teaspoons. Give or take, you know.
Now, let me tell you somethin’ else about this bakin’ powder. It ain’t the same as bakin’ soda, no sir. My grandson says bakin’ soda is stronger, like three times stronger. So, don’t go switchin’ them around willy-nilly, or your cake’s gonna be flatter than a pancake. And nobody wants a flat cake, right?
And another thing, don’t go thinkin’ you can just cut that 1 1/2 teaspoons in half and get the same result. If you cut it in half, you only get 3/4 of a teaspoon. That’s like… a little bit more than half a teaspoon, but not quite a whole one. This baking stuff, it’s all about proportions, see? You gotta get it just right.
So, if your recipe calls for 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, that’s 7.2 grams, give or take. And make sure you’re usin’ baking powder, not baking soda, unless the recipe says so. And don’t go messing with the amounts, unless you know what you’re doing. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a mess, and nobody wants that.
I tell ya, back in my day, we didn’t worry so much about all these grams and teaspoons. We just knew how much to put in by feel. But I guess that’s just the way things are now. Everything’s gotta be measured and weighed and calculated. Makes my head spin sometimes, it does.
But hey, as long as the food tastes good, that’s all that matters, right? Whether you use 7.2 grams or a pinch and a dash, as long as it comes out tasty, that’s the main thing. So don’t fret too much about it, just try your best and it’ll be alright. And if it ain’t alright, well, you can always try again. That’s what I always say.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my biscuits. I baked them using my grandma’s old recipe. No fancy grams in that one, just good old-fashioned eyeballing. And I bet they’ll taste just fine.
