Okay, so, today I wanted to mess around with making a canvas piping bag. I’ve used those plastic ones before, and they’re okay, but I heard these canvas ones are tougher and can handle thicker stuff, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
First off, I gathered my materials. I found some sturdy canvas fabric in my craft box. I also grabbed scissors, a ruler, some pins, and my sewing machine. I didn’t have a pattern, so I just drew a big triangle on the fabric. I made it pretty large, thinking a bigger bag would be easier to handle.

- Cut out the triangle.
- Folded it in half, right sides together.
- Pinned the two long edges.
Then, I sewed those two edges together, leaving the short side open. I made sure to reinforce the seams because I didn’t want any blowouts when I started piping. That would be a disaster, right? I flipped the bag right side out, and it was starting to look like something!
Next, I needed a hole for the piping tip. I cut a small snip at the pointy end, just big enough to fit a standard tip. I probably should have measured that better, but hey, I was winging it. For the top edge, I just folded it over and sewed it down to keep it from fraying. It wasn’t the prettiest, but it was functional.
The Test
Time to test it out! I whipped up some thick buttercream frosting. I spooned it into my new bag, fitted a piping tip, and gave it a squeeze. The frosting came out pretty well! The bag held up nicely, no leaks or anything. I piped a few swirls and rosettes on a plate, just to practice. It felt good in my hand, sturdy and reliable. I can see why people like these canvas bags, especially for heavy-duty piping.
Cleanup was a bit of a pain, though. I had to scrub the inside pretty good to get all the frosting out, and it took forever to dry. I hung it up and hoped it would be ready to use again soon. All in all, it was a fun little project. My homemade canvas piping bag wasn’t perfect, but it worked, and that’s what matters. Maybe next time, I’ll try to make it a bit neater, but for now, I’m pretty happy with my new baking tool!
