Okay, so I’ve been getting into this whole bulk buying thing to save money, and baking powder was on my list. I mean, who doesn’t use baking powder? But then I realized, I don’t bake that often. So, the big question: how do I keep this giant tub of baking powder from going bad before I use it all up?
My Baking Powder Storage Experiment
First, I did some digging. Turns out, moisture and air are the enemies of baking powder. They make it lose its oomph, that rising power we all need for fluffy cakes and biscuits. My mission was clear: keep it dry and airtight.

Here’s what I did:
- Checked the original container: My baking powder came in a plastic tub with a screw-on lid. It seemed pretty tight, but I wasn’t taking any chances.
- Considered my options: I thought about transferring it to a glass jar, you know, those fancy ones with the rubber seals. But then I realized, that’s just another thing to wash.
- Went for the simple solution: I decided to keep it in the original container, but I added an extra layer of protection.
- Added a Zip Bag :put it in a big ziplock bag.
That’s it! I squeezed out as much air as possible from the ziplock bag before sealing it. Then, I popped the whole thing in a cool, dark cupboard. Away from the stove, away from any potential steam or humidity.
The Results (So Far)
It’s been a few months now, and my baking powder is still going strong. I tested it recently by mixing a teaspoon with some hot water – it fizzed up nicely, which means it’s still good to go!
I’m pretty happy with this simple storage method. It didn’t require any extra fancy containers, and it seems to be working perfectly. I’ll keep checking it every few months, but for now, I’m calling this a win!
