Bags for Bread: Easy Ways to Prevent Mold and Stale Bread
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

So, I got really into baking my own bread lately. It’s awesome, the smell, the taste, everything. But I quickly ran into a problem – how the heck do I keep this bread fresh? I mean, I don’t want it to get all moldy and gross after just a couple of days.

I started experimenting, you know, like a mad scientist in the kitchen. My first try? Just leaving the loaf on the counter. Big mistake. It went hard as a rock super fast. Then I figured, okay, plastic wrap. Nope. That just made it all sweaty and weird.

Bags for Bread: Easy Ways to Prevent Mold and Stale Bread

My “Bread-Saving” Experiments

  • The Countertop Fail: Bread became a weapon in two days.
  • Plastic Wrap Disaster: Sweaty bread is not good bread.

So I read online and they said things such as:

  • Bread bins
  • Paper bags
  • Cloth bags
  • Freezer

I dug out a couple of those reusable grocery bags, the cloth kind. I figured, hey, they breathe, right? So, I popped a loaf into one of those. It worked… okay. Better than the counter or the plastic, for sure. It kept the bread from turning into a total brick, but it still dried out a bit faster than I wanted.

I wanted to keep the experiment going, Then, I remembered those brown paper bags you get at the bakery sometimes. I had a few lying around, so I tried one of those. And guess what? It worked pretty darn well! The bread stayed softer for longer, and it didn’t get that weird, trapped-moisture thing going on. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a definite improvement.

Paper vs. Cloth

  • Cloth Bag: Okay, but still a bit of drying.
  • Paper Bag: Better! Softer for longer, less moisture weirdness.

I also tried using the freezer, I wrap the bread with something, and keep it there for a few days, it worked, the bread keep good.

So, that’s where I’m at now. I’m mostly using paper bags, and sometimes the cloth bags if I run out of paper. Still, It keeps the bread fresh much longer.
