So, I decided I needed some large spatulas. You know how it is, flipping big pancakes or a piece of fish, and the darn thing just breaks apart with a regular small spatula? Yeah, happened to me all the time. Got pretty annoying, honestly.
I was browsing online, just looking around, and saw these really big ones. Like, seriously oversized. Looked kinda professional, but also maybe a bit much? Anyway, I thought, what the heck, let’s give it a try. Ordered a couple, one was metal, pretty solid, the other was silicone, more flexible.

Getting Started with the Big Boys
When they arrived, man, they were big. Felt a bit weird holding them at first, like I was gonna conduct an orchestra or something, not flip an omelet. First thing I did, naturally, was make pancakes. Sunday morning, big stack planned.
- Mixed up the batter, poured a nice big one on the griddle.
- Waited for the bubbles. This was the moment of truth.
- Slid that giant metal spatula underneath. Felt sturdy.
- And flip! It actually worked perfectly. The whole pancake, lifted clean, flipped over easy. No breaks, no mess. I felt pretty pleased, gotta say.
Okay, success number one. Felt bolder. Next, I tried fried eggs. That… didn’t go quite as well. The huge spatula was just too clumsy for delicate little eggs. Trying to get under one without disturbing the others? Tricky. Managed it, but it wasn’t exactly graceful. The silicone one was a bit better for eggs, less likely to break the yolk, but still felt oversized.
The Real Test and What I Found
The real challenge I bought these for was fish. Got a nice big fillet, pan-searing it. Used the big metal one again. It definitely handled the size better than my old small one. Slid under okay. But lifting it? The fillet was heavy, and the spatula, while wide, felt like it might bend just a little under the weight. Didn’t drop it, thankfully, but it wasn’t as effortless as I’d hoped. It did the job, prevented the dreaded fish-flop-fail, so that’s a win.
Here’s the thing though. Using them day-to-day? Not really practical for most stuff. They take up a ton of space in the utensil drawer, for one. Washing them is also a bit of a pain, especially the really wide metal one. Doesn’t fit nicely in the dishwasher slots, kinda awkward to handwash in the sink.
So, my final take? Large spatulas are great for specific tasks. Absolutely killer for big pancakes, large omelets, maybe even moving cookies off a baking sheet sometimes. Flipping big pieces of fish or meat? Yeah, they help there too, makes it much less likely you’ll break things apart.
But for everyday cooking? Scrambled eggs, single burgers, smaller stuff? Nah. Too cumbersome. I find myself reaching for my regular-sized, trusty spatula most of the time. The big ones stay in the drawer until pancake day or when I’m cooking something large enough to actually need them. They’re a specialty tool, not an everyday workhorse, at least in my kitchen.
