Looking for Whole Wheat Sourdough Bread, Where to Get the Best Loaf?

Okay, so I’ve been on this huge sourdough kick lately. I love the tangy flavor and the chewy texture, but I was getting tired of the same old white sourdough. I wanted to try whole wheat sourdough, you know, for a little extra somethin’-somethin’ in the flavor and maybe a bit healthier. But, finding it? That was a whole adventure in itself.

The Search Begins

I started, like most people do, with what was closest.

  • My Local Grocery Store: Nope. Plenty of regular sourdough, but no whole wheat. They had some “wheat” bread, but it wasn’t sourdough, and it wasn’t even 100% whole wheat. Strike one.
  • The Fancy Bakery Downtown: I had high hopes for this place. They make amazing pastries, so surely they’d have whole wheat sourdough, right? Wrong again. They had a beautiful sourdough selection, all white flour. The baker looked at me like I had two heads when I asked about whole wheat. Strike two.

Getting Creative (and Desperate)

At this point, I was starting to think whole wheat sourdough was a myth. But I’m stubborn. So I kept looking.

  • Farmer’s Market: Okay. Find a good looking bread booth. I chatted with a friendly baker. She explained that whole wheat sourdough is trickier to make because the bran in the whole wheat flour can interfere with gluten development. It makes sense, but it didn’t get me any closer to my bread.

Success…Finally!

  • I found a stall with a guy selling all sorts of rustic-looking loaves. And there it was, in all its glory. I grabbed a loaf and check this out.

It wasn’t cheap. but honestly, at that point, I was willing to pay. I think my adventure paid off.

I brought my treasure * loaf was still slightly warm, and the smell was incredible. When I sliced into it, it had that perfect sourdough texture, the whole wheat gave it a richer, slightly nuttier flavor. It was exactly what I had been searching for.

So, lesson learned? Finding good whole wheat sourdough bread can be tough, but it is possible, you’ve just gotta keep your eyes peeled, and check those. Your best bet is to look beyond the grocery store. good luck!
