Okay, so today I decided to make some shortbread biscuits, and you know, they’re pretty plain on their own. So, I thought, why not whip up some icing to jazz them up? Let me tell you how it went.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed my usual shortbread recipe – you know, the basic butter, flour, sugar kind. Nothing fancy. I mixed everything up, rolled out the dough, and used some cookie cutters to make fun shapes. Stars, hearts, the usual.

I baked them until they were just golden brown and let them cool completely. Gotta have a cool surface for the icing, right?
Making the Icing
Now for the icing! I’m no expert, but I’ve found a super simple recipe that works every time. I took:
- 1 cup of powdered sugar (make sure it’s sifted – no lumps allowed!)
- 2-3 tablespoons of milk (I used regular, but you can use whatever you have)
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (because vanilla makes everything better)
I dumped the powdered sugar into a bowl, then slowly added the milk, one tablespoon at a time. I stirred it all up with a whisk, making sure there were no sneaky sugar clumps hiding. It’s all about that smooth consistency, you know?
Once it was nice and smooth, I stirred in the vanilla. Mmm, smelling good already!
Decorating Time!
This is the fun part! I divided the icing into a few smaller bowls and added a few drops of food coloring to each one. I went for classic red, green, and blue. I just used toothpicks to create some simple swirls, but you can get as creative as you want!
I spooned some of the icing onto the biscuits. It wasn’t perfect, some dripped a little. And some shapes were kinda messy. But hey, that’s part of the homemade charm, right?
The Final Result
I let the icing set for about 30 minutes until it was firm. And there you have it! Plain shortbread biscuits, all dressed up and ready to be devoured. They might not be bakery-perfect, but they tasted amazing, and that’s all that matters!
