Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get this perfect shade of mauve for some frosting, you know, that dusty, muted purple-y color? I tried just mixing red and blue food coloring, but it always ended up either too bright purple or, like, a weird grayish-brown. Disaster!
So I started digging around online, looking for tips. I found a few different methods, but honestly, some of them were just too complicated. I’m not trying to become a professional baker here, I just want some pretty cupcakes!

My Experiment Begins
First, I grabbed my basic white frosting. Always start with white, that’s key. Then, I got out my food coloring. I have the gel kind, which I think works better than the liquid stuff, it’s more concentrated.
I decided to try a combination of pink, blue, and a tiny bit of black. The black is supposed to be the secret weapon to get that muted, dusty tone. Sounds weird, I know, but I was willing to give it a shot.
- Step 1: I put a few drops of pink into a small bowl of frosting. Just a little to start, you can always add more.
- Step 2: Then, I added one drop of blue. Seriously, just one. Blue is strong!
- Step 3: This is where it gets scary. I took a toothpick and dipped it into the black food coloring. I mean, the tiniest amount. Then I swirled that toothpick into the frosting.
I mixed it all up, and… it was actually starting to look pretty good! It was still a little too bright, so I added another tiny swirl of black from the toothpick. And then, I mixed some more.
It took a little bit of tweaking, adding a touch more pink here, a smidge more blue there, but eventually, I got it! It was that perfect, dusty mauve I was going for. Not too purple, not too gray, just right.
Honestly, the biggest lesson I learned was to go slow. Add the colors in really small amounts, especially the black. It’s way easier to add more color than to try and take it away. And the toothpick trick? Genius! It helped me control the black so much better than trying to squeeze a drop out of the bottle.
So, yeah, that’s how I made my mauve food coloring. My cupcakes are going to look amazing!
