85 Degrees Egg Tart: Is It Worth the Hype (Taste Test!)

Okay, so I’ve been seeing these 85 Degrees Bakery Cafe egg tarts all over my social media, and I finally caved. I had to try making them myself. I mean, who doesn’t love a good egg tart?

The Hunt for Ingredients

First things first, I needed to gather my ingredients. I already had most of the basics like flour, butter, sugar, and eggs. But I did need to make a quick run to the store for some evaporated milk and, because I was feeling ambitious, I decided to grab pre-made tart shells.

Mixing It Up

I started out by following a recipe I found online. Honestly, I kinda just skimmed it. The custard filling seemed pretty straightforward: whisk together eggs, sugar, evaporated milk, and a touch of vanilla extract. It was pretty simple, just dump and mix really.

Pre-made crust use:

  • If I do not want to make the crust from starch, buy pre-made crusts directly.

The Baking Process

I poured the custard mixture into the tart shells, making sure not to overfill them. I can fill about 6 tarts with this volume.

Then, into the oven they went! I baked them at around 350 degrees, I think. I didn’t really time it, just kept an eye on them until the custard was set and slightly golden brown on top. It took, maybe, 25-30 minutes?

The Taste Test

Finally, the moment of truth! I let the egg tarts cool down for a bit before taking a bite. And… they were pretty good! The custard was creamy and sweet, and the crust was flaky. They weren’t exactly like the 85 Degrees ones, but hey, for a first attempt, I was happy.

Tips and Tricks from my try

  • Next time I might add a small amount of hot water, just a little, to the mixture.

I might tweak the recipe a bit next time, but overall, it was a baking success! Now I can satisfy my egg tart cravings whenever I want.
