Okay, so the other day I was working on a cake, and as usual, things got a little messy. I had like three different piping bags going with different colors of frosting, and it was a total circus trying to keep them all from oozing everywhere.
I’ve seen those fancy piping bag clips online, but I’m way too cheap to buy them. So I thought, “There’s gotta be a way to DIY this, right?”

My Makeshift Solution
First, I grabbed a bunch of those binder clips – you know, the black ones with the silver arms? The ones you probably have lying around your office or junk drawer. I figured they’d be strong enough to pinch the ends of the piping bags closed.
I filled my piping bags with frosting, twisted the open ends to get the air out, and then folded the twisted part over a couple of times to make it thicker.
Then, I just clipped a binder clip onto each folded end. Boom! Instant piping bag seal.
Did it Work?
You bet it did! It wasn’t the prettiest solution, but it totally prevented the frosting from leaking out when I wasn’t using the bags. It made switching between colors so much easier, and I didn’t end up with a rainbow mess on my counter.
Here’s a breakdown of what I used:
- Binder clips (various sizes, depending on how full your piping bags are)
- Piping bags (duh)
- Frosting (also duh)
Seriously, it was that simple. I saved myself a few bucks and a whole lot of frustration. Next time you’re wrestling with multiple piping bags, give this little trick a try. You might be surprised how well it works!
