Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try making my own crackers for a while now. I finally decided to give these wheat soda crackers a shot. Let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey, but a fun one!
Getting Started
First things first, I gathered all my ingredients. I’m talking flour, whole wheat flour (of course!), a bit of baking soda, some salt, a little sugar, and some shortening. Oh, and water – can’t forget that!

Mixing It Up
I threw the dry ingredients into a big bowl and gave them a good whisk. Then, I cut in the shortening. Now, this part was a little tricky. I used a pastry blender thingy, but honestly, my hands probably would have worked just as well. The goal was to get it all crumbly, like coarse sand, you know?
Next, I slowly added the water, mixing it all together until it formed a dough. It was a bit sticky at first, but I just kept kneading it on a floured surface. And let me tell you, kneading is a workout! I probably did it for a good 5-7 minutes until the dough was nice and smooth.
Rolling and Shaping
This is where the fun (and slightly frustrating) part began. I divided the dough in half and rolled one half out super thin. Like, paper-thin, if possible. I used a rolling pin, and it took some effort to get it that thin. Then i tried the other *’s also OK.
Once it was rolled out, I used a pizza cutter to cut the dough into little squares. You could use a cookie cutter for different shapes, but I was going for the classic square look. Then, I pricked each square a few times with a fork – I guess this helps them bake evenly or something.
Baking Time
I carefully transferred the squares onto a baking sheet.I preheated my oven and baked them. I think I overdid them a bit, but it tasted good!
The Verdict
They were surprisingly good! They had that nice, slightly salty, wheaty flavor. Perfect with some cheese or even just on their * time i will make some adjustment, but for the first time, I’m pretty proud of myself!
