Okay, so I saw these super cute butterfly cake toppers on Pinterest and thought, “I gotta try that!” They looked so delicate and pretty, perfect for my niece’s birthday cake. Here’s how it went down.
Getting Started
First, I gathered all my stuff. I already had some wafer paper, which is like, edible paper. You can find it at most baking supply stores or online. I also grabbed my food coloring – I went with gel colors because they’re more vibrant. And of course, I needed some small paintbrushes, a pair of scissors, and a little dish of water.

Making the Butterflies
I started by finding some butterfly templates online. I just googled “butterfly outlines” and printed a few different sizes. Then, I carefully cut them out. These were my guides for the wafer paper.
Next, I laid the wafer paper flat and gently traced the butterfly shapes onto it with a food-safe marker (you can also skip the marker and just cut, but I wanted to be precise!). Then, I carefully cut out the wafer paper butterflies. This was a little tricky because the wafer paper is super thin and tears easily. Slow and steady wins the race!
Adding the Color
Now for the fun part – painting! I put a tiny drop of each gel color onto a plate. I dipped my brush into a little bit of water, then into the color, and started painting the wings. I tried to blend the colors a bit to make them look more natural, like real butterfly wings. I also added some small details with a fine-tipped brush.
- Don’t soak the wafer paper with water.
- A little bit of color goes a long way.
- Be prepared to have colorful fingers,it is really colorful!
The Finishing Touches
Once the colors were dry (it didn’t take long), I gently bent the wings upward to give them a 3D effect. Some people use a little bit of edible glue to stick the wings together at the body, but I found that just bending them worked fine. And there you have it! Beautiful, edible butterfly cake toppers!
I stuck them onto the cake with a little bit of frosting, and they looked amazing! My niece loved them, and everyone was super impressed that I made them myself. Definitely a win!
