So, I was baking a cake the other day, and the recipe called for fine sanding sugar. I looked in my pantry, and all I had was regular granulated sugar. I thought, “No problem, I’ll just make my own!”
First, I grabbed my trusty food processor. You could probably use a blender too, but I find the food processor works better for this.

Getting Started
I measured out the amount of sugar the recipe called for – about a cup, I think. Then, I just dumped it into the food processor.
- Put the lid on tight.
- Pulse it.
I pulsed it a few times, maybe five or six short bursts. You don’t want to just turn it on and let it run, or you’ll end up with powdered sugar, which is a whole different thing. Also It’s too fine.
Checking the Results
After a few pulses, I took off the lid and checked the sugar. I was looking for something that was finer than regular sugar, but not as fine as powdered sugar. It’s kind of like that sparkly sugar you see on cookies sometimes.
It took a few more pulses to get it just right. I’d say maybe ten pulses in total, but it depends on your food processor. Just keep checking it until it looks right.
All Done!
Once I was happy with the texture, I used it in my cake recipe. It worked perfectly! The cake turned out great, and you couldn’t even tell I’d made the sanding sugar myself.
So, there you have it! It’s super easy to make fine sanding sugar at home if you have a food processor or blender. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little to get the perfect texture.
