Okay, so I wanted to get better at handling the ball, right? I heard about this “egg beater” drill and thought, “Why not give it a shot?” I’m not the best, but I’m always up for trying new things.
First, I grabbed a basketball. I’ve got this old one that’s pretty worn, but it still bounces okay. I went out to my driveway – it’s not perfect, kinda cracked, but it’s my practice space.

Getting Started
The idea, as I understood it, is to keep the ball moving constantly between your legs, like you’re whisking eggs. I wasn’t even sure I’d get this. I put on the timer on the Phone.
- Started with the ball in my right hand.
- Tried to dribble it through my legs to my left hand. Man, that felt awkward at first. The ball bounced off my foot more than a few times.
- Kept going, back and forth, right to left, left to right, between my legs.
It was… rough. Seriously rough. I kept losing the ball. It would go bouncing off down the driveway, and I’d have to chase after it. My back started to ache from bending over so much. I probably looked like a complete idiot to anyone watching.
Finding a Rhythm (Sort Of)
After about, I don’t know, 15 minutes of this mess, I started to get a little better. I figured I could start speeding the dribble up and down. I wasn’t great, but I was losing the ball less often. I could feel my arms getting tired, and my legs were burning a bit, too. I realized I needed to keep my head up – I was staring at the ball the whole time, which probably wasn’t helping.
I kept at it for another 15 minutes or so. I’m still not fast, and I still mess up a lot, but I can feel a slight improvement. My handles feel a tiny bit tighter. And the move between my legs feels more better.
The Takeaway
This drill is tough! It’s definitely not something you master in one session. But it’s also kind of satisfying to see even a little progress. I’m going to keep working on this, maybe a few times a week. I’m hoping that eventually, I’ll be able to do it without looking like I’m wrestling a greased pig. And most importantly, I can improve my dribble game.
I set up the timer again and tried to dribble a bit faster, though it was still clumsy.I think I’ll try this regularly.
