Frozen egg tart shell vs. homemade: Which is better?

Okay, so the other day I was craving something sweet and easy, and I remembered I had these frozen egg tart shells in my freezer. I’d bought a box a while back, thinking they’d be perfect for a quick dessert sometime. That sometime was now!

Getting Started

First, I took the box out of the freezer. I wasn’t sure how many I wanted to make, so I just let them sit on the counter for a few minutes while I figured things out.

While the shells were thawing a bit, I preheated my oven. I think I set it to 375°F, but I honestly just guessed based on past baking experiences. I figured it’s better to start a bit lower and increase if needed.

Making the Filling

The best part about these shells is you can fill them with whatever you want! I decided to go with a super simple custard.

  • I grabbed some eggs, milk, sugar, and a little bit of vanilla extract.
  • I whisked everything together in a bowl. I didn’t measure anything precisely – just eyeballed it until it looked like a good consistency.
  • I am sure you will know when the consistency looks good. If not, just keep trying until you get your favorite taste.

Filling and Baking

Once the oven was hot and the filling was ready, I arranged the tart shells on a baking sheet. No need to grease them or anything since they were already pre-made.

Then, I carefully poured the custard mixture into each shell, making sure not to overfill them. I think I left about a quarter of an inch of space at the top.

I popped the baking sheet into the oven and set a timer for, like, 20 minutes. I wasn’t totally sure how long they’d take, so I kept an eye on them.

The Finished Product

After about 25 minutes, the filling was set and the edges of the shells were golden brown. They smelled amazing!

I took them out of the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. And you need to be patient!

Once they were cool enough to handle, I dug in. Seriously, so good! The custard was creamy and sweet, and the shells were perfectly flaky. It was the perfect easy treat, and it took hardly any effort at all. This is great!

Next time, I might try adding some fruit or maybe even a little chocolate to the filling. The possibilities are endless!
