Today, I wanted to try something new in the kitchen, so I decided to make some garlic soda crackers. I’d never made crackers before, let alone ones with garlic, so it was a bit of an adventure. I gathered all the ingredients I thought I’d need: flour, baking soda, salt, butter, water, and of course, garlic. I found a basic recipe online and figured I could wing the garlic part.
First, I mixed the dry ingredients in a big bowl. I used about two cups of flour, a teaspoon of baking soda, and half a teaspoon of salt. I whisked them together until they were all combined. Then, I cut in the butter. I used cold butter, about half a cup, and worked it into the flour mixture with my fingers until it looked like coarse crumbs. It was a bit messy, but kind of fun.

Next, I minced a few cloves of garlic. I love garlic, so I used about three big cloves. I added the minced garlic to the flour and butter mixture and mixed it in. Then, I slowly added water, a little at a time, mixing until a dough formed. I didn’t want it too sticky, so I was careful not to add too much water. Once the dough came together, I kneaded it a few times on a lightly floured surface.
Forming and Baking
After kneading, I rolled out the dough with a rolling pin until it was pretty thin, maybe about 1/8 inch thick. Then, I used a pizza cutter to cut the dough into squares. I pricked each square a few times with a fork. I read somewhere that this helps them bake evenly. This part was a little time-consuming, but it was kind of relaxing.
- Preheated the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Placed the crackers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Baked them for about 12-15 minutes.
I kept an eye on them while they were baking. I wanted them to be golden brown and crispy. Once they looked done, I took them out of the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. They smelled amazing! The garlic aroma filled the whole kitchen.
Finally, I tried one. It was crispy and had a nice garlic flavor. They were actually pretty good, especially for a first attempt. I think they would be great with some cheese or dip. I might try adding some herbs next time, maybe some rosemary or thyme. Overall, it was a successful baking experiment, and I’m excited to make them again with some variations.
Making these garlic soda crackers was a fun and rewarding experience. It wasn’t too difficult, and the results were delicious. I’d definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re looking for a homemade snack.
