Okay, so I’ve been messing around with baking a lot lately, and let me tell you, getting the colors right on frosting and stuff can be a real pain. I used to just grab whatever food coloring was at the grocery store, but those watery ones? Forget about it. They make your frosting all runny, and the colors are never bright enough. So, I started looking into gel food coloring ’cause I heard it was way better.
First, I tried some random brands I found online. Some were okay, but nothing to write home about. Then, I saw a bunch of people talking about AmeriColor. I figured, why not? I ordered their Student Kit ’cause it had a good mix of basic colors, and I wasn’t trying to go crazy yet.

When the package came, I was pretty excited. I ripped that box open and started playing around right away. My first project was a batch of cupcakes for my niece’s birthday. I wanted to make the frosting this really vibrant pink, her favorite color.
I mixed up my buttercream, and then, here comes the fun part. I squeezed just a tiny bit of the AmeriColor gel into the frosting. Seriously, just a drop. And holy cow, the color! It was so intense and exactly the shade of pink I was going for. No more pale, washed-out colors. This stuff was the real deal.
- I mixed the gel in, and it blended like a dream. No weird streaks or anything. The frosting stayed nice and thick, which was a huge relief after those watery colors I used before.
- I also tried mixing a couple of colors together to make a custom shade, and that worked great too. The colors blended really well, and I ended up with this awesome purple color that I used for some accents on the cupcakes.
- The AmeriColor Student Kit is also really fade-resistant. I made the cupcakes a day ahead of time, and the colors stayed just as bright and vibrant the next day. That was a big plus because I didn’t want to be scrambling to make frosting at the last minute.
- I also learned that AmeriColor has a Heavenly Seventy kit, which has like a million colors. I haven’t tried that yet because I am still a beginner, but maybe one day.
- I also checked out some other brands, like Good Cooking Liqua-Gel and Wilton Gel Food Color. The Good Cooking ones looked okay in the pictures, and the Wilton ones seemed pretty standard, but I am sticking with AmeriColor.
My Experience
Since then, I’ve used the AmeriColor gels for all sorts of things – cakes, cookies, even macarons. It’s been a total game-changer. My baking looks so much more professional now, and I’m not afraid to experiment with different colors and designs.
Honestly, if you’re into baking and you’re still using those old liquid food colorings, do yourself a favor and try out some gel colors, especially AmeriColor. It’s a small change, but it makes a huge difference. Happy baking!
