Today, I want to share something I messed around with in the kitchen. I was trying to make some dipped strawberries, you know, the fancy kind you see all over Instagram? I grabbed some candy melts from the store, thinking it would be a breeze. Turns out, those little suckers are thicker than I expected when melted!
So, I’m standing there, staring at this goopy mess, and I remember seeing somewhere that you can use oil to thin these things out. I had a bottle of vegetable oil in the pantry, so I thought, why not give it a shot? I mean, what’s the worst that could happen, right?

First, I melted the candy melts in a double boiler. They were looking pretty thick, not the smooth, drippy consistency I was going for. I started small, added just a tiny splash of vegetable oil to the melted candy. I stirred it in and watched closely.

Observation 1
The candy melts started to loosen up a bit, but not quite enough.
So I added a little more oil, a bit at a time, stirring like crazy after each addition. I was careful not to add too much at once, ’cause I didn’t want to end up with oily, separated chocolate.

Observation 2
Slowly but surely, the candy melts started to get thinner and smoother.
I kept going until it reached the perfect dipping consistency, like, you know, when you lift the spoon, and it drips off in a nice, even stream? It wasn’t too runny, but it wasn’t a thick blob either.

Observation 3
Success! The candy melts were now thin enough to coat the strawberries beautifully. No lumps, no bumps, just a smooth, glossy finish.
After all that trial and error, the strawberries turned out great! The chocolate coating was on point, and they tasted pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. I even drizzled some extra melted candy on top for that extra fancy touch. So, yeah, it turns out you can use vegetable oil to thin candy melts. It just takes a little patience and a whole lot of stirring. But hey, it worked for me, and now I’ve got a batch of delicious, perfectly dipped strawberries to show for it!

Just remember to go slow with the oil, and you’ll be golden. I also saw some people saying that shortening or those special EZ Thin things work too, but I haven’t tried those yet. Maybe next time!
Happy dipping, folks!
