Okay, so a few days ago, I stumbled upon this thing called “10x sugar”. I was in the grocery store, looking for some regular powdered sugar to make frosting for a cake, and there it was, right next to the regular stuff, labeled “10x sugar”. I was like, “What the heck is 10x sugar? Is this some kind of super sugar?”
I grabbed a bag of each, the regular powdered sugar and the 10x stuff. They looked pretty much the same, both white and powdery. But the 10x felt a bit finer when I touched it through the bag. I figured I’d do a little experiment at home to see what the deal was.

First, I tasted a tiny bit of each. They both tasted like, well, sugar. No big surprise there. But the 10x sugar seemed to dissolve a little faster on my tongue. Maybe that’s the “finest” part they were talking about on the package. I heard that the higher the “x” number, the finer the sugar.
Next, I made two small batches of frosting, one with each type of sugar. I used the same recipe, just swapped out the sugar. When I mixed the regular powdered sugar with the butter and milk, it took a little bit of work to get it smooth. There were a few tiny lumps, but nothing major.
But when I used the 10x sugar, man, that was different! It blended in like a dream. Super smooth, no lumps at all. The frosting made with 10x sugar was definitely silkier. It felt lighter and fluffier, too.
- The Taste Test: Both frostings tasted sweet and delicious, of course. But the 10x sugar frosting had a slightly smoother mouthfeel.
- The Texture: The 10x frosting was the clear winner here. It was so much smoother and more pleasant to eat.
I also tried dusting some powdered sugar on a few brownies. The regular powdered sugar worked fine, but the 10x sugar created a more even, delicate dusting. It looked a little fancier, if you ask me.
So, what did I learn from my little sugar experiment? Well, 10x sugar is basically just a finer version of powdered sugar. They are actually the same, but using 10x sugar gives you a smoother texture, especially in things like frostings and icings. It’s not really “healthier” or “unhealthier” than regular powdered sugar, it’s just, well, finer. They add a little cornstarch in it to keep it from caking. And all powdered sugar is gonna raise your blood sugar levels since it is just sugar.
My Verdict
If you want super smooth frostings or a delicate dusting, go for the 10x sugar. If you’re just using it for something where texture doesn’t matter as much, regular powdered sugar will do just fine. I’ll probably keep both on hand from now on, just to be prepared for any baking situation!
