Okay, so, you wanna know about them big ol’ piping bags, the extra large ones? I’ll tell ya what I know. Folks call ’em pastry bags, icing bags, whatever. They’re just big bags you squeeze stuff out of, ya know? Like for makin’ pretty cakes and cookies, stuff like that.
Now, you see, these ain’t your little sandwich bags, no sir. We’re talkin’ extra large, like 18 inches, 24 inches, even bigger sometimes! Why so big? Well, you gotta fit all that frosting in there, don’t ya? Them little bags, they just don’t hold enough. You try squeezin’ frosting for a whole cake with a little bag, you’ll be fillin’ it up every five minutes. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Some folks like them disposable ones, the kind you just throw away when you’re done. They come in big packs, like 50, 100, even 200 in a pack! You can find ’em cheap, too. I saw some for like, seven bucks, twelve bucks. Not bad, right? They say they’re made of food-grade plastic, so they’re safe and all. And they got all sorts of fancy words on the packages, like “non-slip” and “anti-burst.” I guess that means they don’t slip out of your hand and they don’t pop open when you’re squeezin’ hard. That’s good, cause nobody wants frosting all over the kitchen.

- Reusable Piping Bags: Gotta wash these, but they’re tougher and last longer.
Then there’s the reusable ones. Them’s a bit tougher, you can wash ’em and use ’em again and again. Some folks swear by ’em, say they’re better quality. I don’t know, seems like more work to me, havin’ to wash ’em all the time. But hey, to each their own, right?
Now, you might be wonderin’, what can you do with these big ol’ bags? Well, just about anythin’, really. You can frost cakes, of course. Big cakes, little cakes, cupcakes, all of ’em. You can fill pastries, like them long johns and eclairs. You can even make pretty designs, swirls and flowers and all that fancy stuff. I seen some folks make roses outta frosting, can you believe it? Looks like magic to me.
But what if you ain’t got no piping bags? Well, don’t you worry none. You can use a ziplock bag in a pinch. Just snip off a corner and there ya go! But make sure you get the heavy-duty kind, the thin ones might burst. And maybe tape up the corner a bit, make it stronger, you know? Don’t wanna end up with a mess!
Using extra large piping bags is pretty easy. You just fill ’em up with frosting, twist the top to close it, and squeeze! But you gotta be careful, don’t squeeze too hard or you’ll have frosting everywhere. And don’t squeeze too soft or nothin’ will come out. It takes a little practice, but you’ll get the hang of it. Some folks use those metal tips, to make different shapes. They got all sorts of tips, stars and swirls and all kinds. Me, I just like to keep it simple, a plain round tip does the job just fine.
If you’re buying these big bags, look for words like “thickened” and “tear-proof.” You don’t want them bags splittin’ on ya, that’s for sure! And if you’re buyin’ online, check the sizes real careful. They got all different sizes, 12 inch, 16 inch, 18 inch, 24 inch…make sure you get the one you need. I saw some big sets that come with bags and tips together, that might be a good deal if you’re just starting out.
So there ya have it, that’s all I know about them extra large piping bags. They ain’t nothin’ fancy, just big bags for squeezin’ stuff. But they sure do come in handy if you like to bake. And who don’t like a good cake, right?
