Alright, let’s talk about these whole wheat Ritz crackers, you know, the ones in the box. I heard folks sayin’ they’re healthy, but I ain’t so sure. Seems like everything’s “healthy” these days, but then you look closer and it’s just a bunch of fancy words.
Now, they say five of them little crackers got 70 calories. Seventy! That don’t sound like nothin’, but you eat a handful, then another, and pretty soon you’ve eaten a whole mess of ’em. And calories, well, they stick to ya like glue, I tell ya.

What’s in these things anyway?
- They say “whole wheat,” but is it really? I reckon it’s better than that white flour stuff, but who knows how much whole wheat is actually in there. They probably grind it up so fine you can’t even tell.
- Then there’s sugar, or whatever fancy name they call it now. High fructose corn syrup, they say. Sounds like somethin’ you’d put in your tractor, not in your belly. That stuff ain’t good for ya, that’s for sure. Gives you the sugar shakes and makes your teeth rot, just like my old pappy used to say.
- And fat? Oh, there’s fat in there alright. 2.50 grams for every 5 crackers, they say. Fat makes things taste good, but too much and you’ll be waddlin’ around like a goose.
- And a little bit of protein, just 1.00 gram. Not enough to make a difference, if you ask me. You need good, strong protein to keep you goin’, not this little sprinkle they put in these crackers.
They also got somethin’ called “carbs,” 10.00 grams in those five crackers they talk about. Carbs, that’s what gives you energy, they say. But too many and you’ll be feelin’ sluggish and tired, like you just plowed a field all day. And 62% of the calories are carbs, they said it somewhere.
Now, some folks say whole grains are good for you. Keeps your pipes clean, you know? But like I said, how much whole grain is really in these crackers? And what else they put in there? Bleached flour, bakin’ soda, and all sorts of other things I can’t even pronounce. Sounds like somethin’ you’d find in a chemistry set, not in your kitchen.
They talk about vitamins and minerals too, like Vitamin K, Iron, Phosphorus, Selenium, and Zinc. Said it’s rich in them things. Maybe so, but I’d rather get my vitamins from a good ol’ tomato fresh from the garden, not from some cracker in a box. My old neighbor, bless her heart, used to say eat what grows from the ground, not from a factory.
So, are these whole wheat Ritz crackers healthy? I ain’t no doctor, but I don’t think so. They might be a little better than those plain white crackers, but they ain’t no health food. They’re tasty, I’ll give ‘em that, little bit salty and crunchy, good with some cheese or peanut butter, but you gotta watch yourself. Too much of anything ain’t good for ya, especially this processed stuff.
If you want something healthy, eat an apple, eat some carrots, eat somethin’ that comes from the good earth. These crackers, well, they’re alright for a snack now and then, but don’t go thinkin’ you’re doin’ yourself a favor by eatin’ a whole box. That’s just askin’ for trouble, you hear? And all that fat, 32% they say, that just goes straight to your hips, I’m tellin’ ya.
They break it down for ya too, these city folk with their numbers. 6% protein, 60% carbs, and 34% fat. Sounds like a whole lot of figuring for just a little cracker. Back in my day, we ate what we grew, and we didn’t worry about all these fancy percentages. Just good, honest food, that’s what kept us goin’.

So, there you have it. My two cents on these whole wheat Ritz crackers. Take it or leave it, it’s up to you. But remember, just cause it says “whole wheat” don’t mean it’s good for ya. You gotta use your common sense, and listen to your body. It’ll tell you what’s what, if you just pay attention.
And one last thing, those little crackers, they got a high calorie density they say. Means there’s a lot of calories packed into a small bite. So you eat a few, and you’re already up to 18 calories a cracker (4g). See what I mean? It all adds up faster than you think. So be careful, that’s all I’m sayin’. Be careful.
